Righteous and Unrighteous

Mother Ricarda Beauchamp Hambrough, Roman Catholic nun from Brighton who, during Nazi occupation, helped hide 60 Jews in her Casa di San Brigida convent in Rome.

Rose to Abbess, and died in 1966 aged 79. There are petitions to have her made a saint.

sister anthony

Sister Anthony (aka Maria Antoniazzi), from Lancashire and also at the Bridgettine convent.

Died in 1990, but had been made a Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem in Jerusalem.

Monsignor Hugo O’Flaherty who orchestrated the events which Hambrough and Antoniazzi participated in, and others.

Died in 1963, and played by Gregory Peck in 1983 film, The Scarlet and the Black.

Irena Sendler, Polish nurse and social worker who, with the Zegota, hid almost three thousand Jewish children from the occupying Nazis and Polish antisemites.

With Irena Schultz, a German citizen who was aware of the Nazis’ intentions (anyone with photographs?), she secured access to the Warsaw Ghetto with forged identification. Training a dog to bark whenever she entered and left, she carried small children out in a toolbox and larger children in a sack. Eventually caught, and beaten by Nazi guards until both her legs and one arm broke.

Did not reveal the false identities she had arranged for the rescued children, details of which she had hidden in a jar buried in her garden.

Died in 2008, aged 98, after loosing out on the Nobel Peace Prize to someone who was once US Vice-President and lost a Presidential election.

Now played by Anna Paquin in The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler, an American TVM production. Has posthumously been awarded the 2009 Audrey Hepburn Humanitarian Award.

Does not change the absolute fucking disgrace of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.

Miep Gies, co-owner of the Achterhuis in which Anne Frank and her family hid between July 1942 and August 1944.

Still living.

Nicholas Winton, London stockbroker who arranged the Czech kindertransport in August 1939. Seven hundred Jewish children were saved, resulting in five thousand descendents.

Still living.

racist filth

Unidentified racist filth at Downing Street, August 2009.

Sadly still living.

UPDATE 28/8 – I am noticing a large spike of traffic following Googles for Irena Sendler and related criteria, including over one hundred on Saturday. Wow! Feel free to leave comments.

The filth has an amazing resemblance to Golda Meir in that picture. Maybe that is why he is so upset. :)

Sometimes I’m not sure that being honoured by the world with its values they way they are is an honour at all. The person in the last photo sums up too much of the world – it’s coarse, it’s gullible and it doesn’t recognise goodness in any form. Putting Irena Sendler or Sister Anthony in front of this world is giving swine pearls to trample. All the world is interested in is wealth and graft and who has the biggest fake boobs and it can’t process anything else. It’s a world that really, really believes that when some Palestinian 20-something blows herself and several dozen people in a restaurant into the next world that she did it coz she was frustrated and hurt by the big bad Israeli occupation when the reality is that no-one makes and gets into a suicide bomber’s gear alone, no, she was helped by her father, brother, uncle – all the men who are supposed to protect her – and sent off to end her life in their cause probably because she’d done something terrible like go on a date. A world that extends sympathy, as it does at every imaginable opportunity, to those people doesn’t have anything to give the Sendlers, O’Flahertys or Maria Skobtsovas – it’s better they’re remembered by those whose hearts can still feel and their reward in heaven is all we and they should care about. Of course, having said that, I am grateful to the people who wrote the books and made the films so that I know about them!

And didn’t Golda look just like Ingrid Bergman? :-p

You really are a disgusting little man, aren’t you? What’s wrong: has life failed to live up to its expectations? Have you found yourself alone and unloved?

Cause it sure sounds like it to me.

In fact, you remind me of one of those medieval witchfinders of old – pointing an (most probably in your case) arthritic finger of blame at others in bitterness at your own lack of self esteem and status in life.

Israel is a racist, apartheid state. Anyone who supports this state ergo is a racist supporter of apartheid.

What a waste of fresh air you are.

[…] By efrafandays Four more names have either occurred or been recommended to me after the success of yesterday’s missive on who is deserving of the grace and mercy of the Alec Church of Universal Love. I mean, three […]

  5. Alec Says:

Hehe, two vulgar Leninists pursuing me across different blogs in two days.

Now this one has mistaken a missive about the promulgation of classic antisemitic calunies which have been thoroughly disproved with a discussion about Israeli policy. Why *is* it that anti-Zionists cannot tell murderous antisemitism when it’s pouring the blood into the matzos right in front of them?

What I’ve often wondered about the Apartheid canard is that under genuine Apartheid and Segregation, there were specific buses or water-fountains or cafes for whites and non-whites.

So, how do self-immolatory terrorists get onto buses and into pizza parlours? How do Arabs and Druzes manage to rise as far as interim President? Could it be that Alice is speaking a load of chocolate salty balls?

  6. Alec Says:

Margaret, I think that’s quite an accurate assessment of what drivers female self-immolatory terrorists. There is almost always an element of sexual shame and, where it didn’t exist before, devil mothers arrange it.

I hadn’t know about Maria Skobtsova, but have added her. What is notable about the others is their complete lacked of any sense of entitlement.

Sendler said “we are not heroes. I continue to have qualms of conscience that I did so little”. Gies has said “I stand at the end of the long, long line of good Dutch people who did what I did or more – much more – during those dark and terrible times years ago, but always like yesterday in the hearts of those of us who bear witness. Never a day goes by that I do not think of what happened then”. Winton didn’t tell even his wife until 1999, and then insisted he was less worthy than the likes of Gies and Sendler ‘cos he didn’t risk his life.

Constrast that with the likes of unidentified racist filth and Alice who, from a little bit of protesting on a street-corner, or visit to Gaza or the West Bank under carefully controlled circumstances – often from bases in comfy Tel Aviv hotels made possible by the security barrier. It’s a loose morality which helps explain why they so easily go over to Hamas.

As for the celebrity culture, it’s true a lot of gawdy but there’s also a class element. Compare the sheer nastiness of attacks on Jade Goody during her cancer to the sympathy another journalist – John Diamond – got with his cancer diaries.

Many of Goody harshest critics had put her up on the likes of Big Brother; just so they could then torment a representative of parts of society they loathed. I don’t deny she was loud-mouthed and coarse and a bad example, but nor do I think she was racist. A bully, yes, but not racist.

The idea that a street-urchin of undetermined racial heritage could possibly condescend to a pale-skinned Indian princess whose father employed dark-skinned Dravidians on subsistence wages in his factory is laughable. The look on Shetty’s face when the Goody family traipsed in!

It was, “Oh no! They’ve let the local dalits in!!!”.

  7. Claudia Says:

Murió Miep Gies… las personas justas nos están dejando.
    Que descanses en paz.

    • efrafandays Says:

I have limited Spanish, but I understood this.

God bless Miep Gies, and God damn those responsible for the AMIA bombing.
