Iris Robinson Would Consider the Adams Family to be Better than Homosexuals

A Grateful Recipient of Amateur Psychiatry

Democratic Unionist MP and MLA, and wife of the First Minister in Northern Ireland, Iris Robinson has announced her resignation from all positions of political office due to bouts of depression.  As someone who has endured periods depression, of varying intensities since puberty, I sympathize with her over this thoroughly… well… depressing condition.

One benefit from starting to seek treatment a few years ago, I hope, has been a greater sympathy for sufferers of other mental illnesses: it should be no more acceptable to mock or pre-judge someone for a wonky mind than it would be for someone who has a withering leg from polio, say.

Perhaps Robinson will now re-appraise her comments regarding homosexuality.  During an interview on BBC Radio Ulster, whilst responding to a homophobic physical assault on Stephen Scott, she found time to describe homosexuality as an “abomination” which “made [her] feel sick [and] nauseous”.

Homosexuality was equated with murder when she offered her vision of Christian forgiveness where “just as a murderer can be redeemed by the blood of Christ, so can a homosexual”.

Rather that ‘fess up, she instructed “anyone [who]takes issue” that “they’re taking issue with the word of God”.  Thus, not only was she a bigot who could not express horror for an unprovoked physical assault which could have killed a man without implicitly blaming the victim, she is also a coward who hides behind the coat-tails of her deity and stands by her “faith and the word of God that man was created in the image of God and that woman was created from the rib of Adam to be his helpmeet and companion”.

Actually, this comment does not surprise me too greatly.  When at school in colonial Africa, my mother’s headmistress argued that women could not over-arm bowl at cricket for this reason.  Then again, said ma’am was born in the 19th Century and believed black Africans were not capable of voting (and was disproved when one girl who clearly had not heard this injunction started over-arm bowling).

In the Belfast Telegraph, Owen Polley (aka Chekov at Three Thousand Versts) writes of Robinson’s belated resignations:

Setting aside the unscientific nature of this proposition, surely experience of a mental illness would have cautioned Robinson against describing its sufferers as “vile” or claiming that they made her “sick”? Her language revealed a startling lack of empathy for fellow human beings.

Spot on.  It is one thing to believe that homosexuality is an unnatural act – which, even if it were limited to the sexual act, a quick trip to a farm should disabuse

But, why the choice of title?  Elsewhere, before a Northern Ireland Grand Committee on Risk and Management of Sex Offenders in the House of Commons, Robinson had said:

There can be no viler act, apart from homosexuality and sodomy, than sexually abusing innocent children.

This is part of the NI Peace Process I did not expect.  Robinson is offering an olive branch to Gerry Adams, who is coming to terms with the fact that he considered the public image of his Irish Republicanism to be more worthy of protection than members of his own family; that there could be worse things than having a brother on the run for sexually abusing his daughters.
